In line with the policy of the Diocese to promote among students and young people a correct attitude towards sex, the Catholic Education Office invited Sister Hanna Klaus, a Medical Mission Sister specialized in Obstetrics & Gynecology, to come all the way from Washington D.C. to conduct two identical workshops on sexuality teaching. These two workshops were held from 19th to 23rd July and 26th to 30th July respectively.
Sister Hanna Klaus is currently the Executive Director of the Natural Family Planning Centre of Washington, D. C. and Workshop Director of the TEENSTAR Programme. She has done a lot of researches and concludes that cultivating teenagers¡¦ correct attitude in sex is mainly the responsibility of adults. She started the TEENSTAR Programme (STAR means Sexuality Teaching in the context of Adult Responsibility) in 1980 which has been operated in over 20 countries.
The TEENSTAR is a comprehensive developmental curriculum teaching responsible decision-making and communication skills in the area of sexual behaviour and enhances teenagers¡¦ self-understanding and self-esteem.
Participants who attended the two workshops included secondary school principals, teachers and social workers from both Diocesan, Religious and Caritas schools. In the 5-day workshop, participants were introduced to a number of useful topics such as adolescent development, basic principles of counseling, tactics of meeting parents, refusal techniques, the impact of mass media, sexually transmitted diseases, natural family planning and most important of all, Theology of the body.
Sister Hanna, the conductor of the two workshops, conveyed the messages through lectures, videos, discussions and role play in which all were actively involved.
The participants enjoyed the lectures and all agreed that the Workshop had given them a deeper understanding of the Church¡¦s view in Sex Education and Sexuality Teaching. They were enlightened to reflect on the meaning of life, to respect human body and marriage life. Apart from obtaining useful materials and knowledge to be used in teaching and shared with colleagues, participants were happy to have built a good network among themselves.
The highlight of two weeks¡¦ event was to have Fr. Dominic Chan VG and Fr. Jocab Kwok to celebrate masses and present certificates to participants during the closing ceremonies of the two workshops on 23rd and 30th July respectively.
