A total of 245 Catholic School Supervisors and Principals attended an experience sharing session organized by the Catholic Education Office on 29th November 2002.
The sharing session commenced with prayers led by Fr. Dominic Chan, V.G., which was followed by an opening address by Bishop Joseph Zen. The Bishop told the participants that they were doing the work of God and love was the greatest investment in their work. Miss Alice Woo, Episcopal Delegate for Education, in her introduction stressed that the primary objective of the sharing session was to follow up the data collected from the surveys on ‘Expectation of Catholic Schools’ and ‘Teaching of Religious Studies and Related Subjects’. For this purpose, the guest speaker, Dr. Francis Cheung, Registrar of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, drew up a general framework for the development of a religious education curriculum which hopefully, would help nurture all round students manifesting Christian spirit as recommended by the Diocesan Synod. Based on this, the principals were advised to take the following steps, viz (i) to seek basic consensus from their staff on the content of the framework; (ii) each school to further develop the framework according to its vision and mission; (iii) to develop the strategic planning ability and self-evaluation skills of the middle management and the teaching staff; (iv) to develop teaching/learning strategy for improving the quality of Catholic education. Following the talk, Sister Margaret Wong, Principal of St. Paul’s Convent School, (Secondary Section) shared information on moral and mental health education obtained during an educational tour to Beijing.
In the second part of the sharing session, the Principals were divided into small groups to discuss on the proposals recommended by Dr. Cheung. The Supervisors, on the other hand, focused their attention on issues such as principals’ continuing professional development, appraisal system and the Education (Amendment) Bill 2002.
The sharing session drew enormous response from the Supervisors and Principals. They contributed towards devising practicable proposals for the promotion of Catholic education. It was unanimously agreed that sharing session of this kind provided a much needed avenue for exchange of views among the Catholic educators and should continue to be organized in future.
